Grandpa’s Art Took Me Places | Recreating His Paintings in Pastels — Part 3

What happens when your grandfather’s painted plates start falling off the wall? You keep drawing them. I’ve now recreated 12 of my grandpa’s acrylic original artworks in soft pastels, and along the way, his art has literally taken me places, from the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse to Loggerhead Marine Life Center in Juno Beach, my favorite park in West Palm Beach, and my first live art session.

🎵 Around Here: Original song for Kenny
Vocals & lyrics by Jackie Morreale
Music & production by Pat McDermott

“Around Here” is an original song that brings together music, art, and remembrance. The song is dedicated to my brother Kenny, who would have celebrated his 40th heavenly birthday on August 5. So happy to share this song now, after 21 years! I originally performed it for Kenny on his 19th birthday in 2005, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Grateful to the Ken Pribil Jr. Foundation for continuing Kenny’s legacy for 20+ years.🌻

Plein Art Sketching: My Art Love Letter to Austria and Palm Beach County

What if your office was outside? For me, plein air sketching started thousands of miles from home in the Austrian Alps, when I wanted to create a unique gift for my family and sat down with my pastels to draw the landscape in front of me. I stopped worrying about being “good” and simply started looking, and sketching what I saw, with 12 timelapse plein air sketches from Austria and Palm Beach, Everglades, Jupiter, and Lake Worth.

Celebrating the Life and Art of Robert George Etienne with his Creativity, Re-Imagined (Part 2)

For my grandfather's heavenly 100th birthday, I began recreating his original acrylic paintings using my own medium: soft pastels. After completing Part 1, I realized our family had almost 100 more of Robert George Etienne's paintings to choose from. My family picked favorites, and I re-created four more drawings. But this time, I took his artwork outdoors. Each recreation became a plein air conversation between Grandpa's imagination and mine.

Happy Heavenly 100th Birthday, Grandpa! Celebrating Robert George Etienne's Life and Legacy by Recreating his Art

When I began recreating my grandfather Robert George Etienne's paintings, I thought I was simply honoring his memory. Instead, I discovered something much deeper. Each pastel drawing became an opportunity to slow down and notice the thoughtful choices he made as an artist, and the ability to find beauty in ordinary moments.
